Fun facts about Dolphins….

  • Dolphins in the wild will seek out humans and surf alongside boats just for play.
  • Dolphins love to ride big waves with surfers.
  • Many dolphins will sleep with one eye open just below the surface of the water.
  • Every dolphin has a unique whistle, much like humans have thumbprints. They identify each other by these whistles.
  • A dolphin can emit a sonic boom loud enough to stun a fish.
  • It has been said that their sonar enables them to see inside living things.
  • The killer whale, or orca, is actually the largest type of dolphin.
  • The land ancestor of the dolphin lived about 50 million years ago and looked a little like a wolf. This animal hunted in shallow waters and by and by adapted itself to life in water.
  • Baby dolphins are born tail-first so they won’t drown.
  • Babies are born with whiskers just above their rostrum, which falls out immediately after birth. You can still see the small black spots on adult dolphins above the rostrum where these used to be.
  • Baby dolphins drink milk just like other mammals that produce milk for their offspring. The baby will swim along with its mother while drinking.
  • Dolphins are known to mate for relaxation, not just for breeding. Males in most species have no role in taking care of the young.
  • There were cases of dolphins which defended shipwrecked people swimming in the water from shark attacks till rescue ships appeared. And real cases of people saved from drowning by dolphins are known; this behavior is mentioned in many tales, from ancient Greek and Roman stories to the legends of the Polynesians and Maori of the New Zealand.
  • Dolphins are also big pranksters, often harassing turtles by rolling them over on their backs. They’ve been seen pulling out the tail feathers of poor pelicans minding their own business on the water.

Fun facts about Easter….

  • Easter is of course the time of year when Christians around the world celebrate the resurrection of their savior Jesus Christ. Three days following His crucifixion, Christ arose, and this rising is now celebrated worldwide at the Easter holiday.
  • As with many holidays, lights, candles and even bonfires play a role in Easter celebrations around the world. Many of the Roman Catholic faith put candles in the church on Good Friday and then light them again with the Easter Candle during Easter morning services.
  • Easter eggs are an ancient symbol of new life, entirely appropriate for a springtime holiday like Easter. Easter is all about renewal and new life, so the egg is not that out of place after all.
  • The rabbit is a symbol of new life and rebirth, and it is probably this association that gave rise to the famous Easter Bunny. Rabbits have long been associated with fertility and birth. The actual Easter Bunny legend is rooted in German tradition. The legend holds that a poor woman living in Germany decorated colorful eggs for her children to find. As soon as the hidden eggs were found by the children, a large bunny was seen hopping away. This ancient legend is thought to be the root of the Easter Bunny we know and love today.
  • According to the Guinness Book of World Records, the largest Easter egg ever made was just over 25-ft high and made of chocolate and marshmallow. The egg weighed 8,968 lbs. and was supported by an internal steel frame.
  • 90 million chocolate Easter bunnies are made for Easter each year.

A few enjoyable and unbelievable Valentine’s Day facts…

  • Women purchase 85% of all valentines.
  • In order of popularity, Valentine’s Day cards are given to teachers, children, mothers, wives, sweethearts and pets.
  • Worldwide, over 50 million roses are given for Valentine’s Day each year.
  • In the Middle Ages, young men and women drew names from a bowl to see who their valentines would be. They would wear these names on their sleeves for one week. To wear your heart on your sleeve now means that it is easy for other people to know how you are feeling.
  • Alexander Graham Bell applied for his patent on the telephone, an “Improvement in Telegraphy”, on Valentine’s Day, 1876.
  • Richard Cadbury invented the first Valentines Day candy box in the late 1800s.
  • The Italian city of Verona, where Shakespeare’s lovers Romeo and Juliet lived, receives about 1,000 letters addressed to Juliet every Valentine’s Day.
  • The oldest surviving love poem to date is written in a clay tablet from the times of the Sumerians, inventors of writing, around 3500 B.C.

Interesting facts about TITANIC…
  • An American writer, Morgan Robertson, wrote a book “The Wreck of Titan” which predicted exactly what happened to the Titanic 14 years later.
  • If placed upright, the Titanic would have been taller than any of the buildings of her time.
  • Her 3 enormous anchors weighed a total of 31 tons, about the weight of 20 cars.
  • Titanic was never christened.
  • Titanic had a near collision as the ship left Southampton.
  • Titanic received 6 iceberg warnings on the day of the collision.
  • The lookouts had no binoculars.
  • Of the 1517 people that perished in the sinking of Titanic, only 306 bodies were ever recovered.

Interesting facts about SUSHI…

  • Sushi dates back to at least the second century A.D., beginning as a method of preserving fish in China
  • Today’s sushi began as a type of fast food – the 19th-century Japanese equivalent of a McDonald’s drive-thru
  • The word “sushi” doesn’t refer to fish at all – it refers to rice that has been seasoned with vinegar, sugar, and salt
  • The mound of wasabi you get at a sushi bar isn’t wasabi at all. Moreover, by mixing it in your soy sauce, you are reducing its potency – and offending the chef
  • One of the favorite sushi fishes yellowtail – is factory farmed like veal and fattened until its muscles disintegrate while it’s still alive
  • The raw shrimp served in sushi all begin life as males – and then they all suddenly become females and have sex with their younger siblings
  • The best sushi chefs prepare octopus by giving the animal a lengthy, full-body massage – while the creature is still moving
